Embracing Summer Fashion: From on Campus to Abroad

Written by Caitlin Robaczewski

As the spring semester is winding down, summer fashion is coming out of hibernation on campus. With the sunny days ahead, we have been getting a sneak peek of some iconic fashion statements for the warm months. And where better to spot these trends than on the vibrant campus of the UW-Madison? Between the nightlife on State Street and the simple afternoons spent under the sun at Memorial Union, this campus curates a diverse student body known for its creativity and individuality. As the temperatures rise and the flowers grow, students are putting away their winter layers and embracing a fresh array of styles that reflect both comfort and originality.

One noticeable trend that is all over the streets this season is the resurgence of retro-inspired looks. From vintage tees from Singlestich or Wisconsin Design Team paired with low-waisted jeans to chic sunglasses, students are channeling their inner retro icons with confidence. It's not uncommon to see pops of vibrant colors and bold patterns inspired by decades past, adding a fun touch to campus sidewalks. With this comes shoes that help pull the whole look together, taking note of the iconic Adidas Samba’s that can be seen all over the streets of Madison.

A popular trend making a significant comeback in fashion circles is the embrace of neutral tones complemented by strategic pops of vibrant colors, such as navy blue or deep green. As seen in the images, one can observe how individuals are creatively styling what can be described on social media as a "coastal" outfit, perfectly suited for the summer of 2024. These ensembles, comprising lightweight skirts, shorts, and relaxed tanks, create a sense of effortless sophistication and casual charm, ideal for the sun-drenched days of summer. Whether lounging on a sandy beach, exploring city streets, or embarking on outdoor adventures, these versatile garments offer both comfort and style, catering to the diverse preferences of students as they embark on their summer vacations to various destinations.

Taking this into consideration, it's important to acknowledge that while students come from diverse corners of the nation, we must also consider those who may be studying abroad during the summer months. Incorporating a diverse range of outfits that embrace the distinct fashion sensibilities of the cities and cultures around us is crucial. Immersing oneself in the vibrant fashion scenes of destinations like Italy or France can serve as inspiration, infusing one's wardrobe with European iconic summer style. Moreover, accessorizing plays a pivotal role in elevating an outfit to new heights. Whether it's layering necklaces or stacking bracelets, the addition of jewelry can effortlessly transform even the simplest outfit into a fashion statement.

Finally, no discussion of spring fashion would be complete without mentioning the importance of sustainability. As awareness of environmental issues grows, many students are opting for eco-friendly clothing options, whether it's shopping secondhand, supporting local artisans, or choosing brands committed to ethical and sustainable practices. Thrifted finds and upcycled pieces not only add character to one's wardrobe but also contribute to a more sustainable fashion ecosystem. Beyond individual style choices, the UW-Madison campus is also home to a vibrant community of fashion enthusiasts who gather to share inspiration and creativity. From student-run fashion shows to DIY workshops, there's no shortage of opportunities for students to express themselves and explore their passion for fashion.

As we wrap up this academic year and eagerly anticipate summer, the spring fashion scene on the UW-Madison campus serves as a reminder of the power of self-expression and the joy of embracing personal style during the warm months. Whether it’s the retro-inspired looks, embracing the coastal look, or keeping it classic with minimalist chic, there are a variety of opportunities to embrace your style over the summer.
