Starting Fresh Next Semester

Written by Lola Schectman

As the semester comes to an end, there is no better time to take some time to pause, reflect, and set yourself up for success. Starting fresh can set the tone for a productive and rewarding semester. Here is how you can reset, recharge and prepare for the upcoming semester.

First, declutter your space and your mind to create a fresh start. A clutter free environment will help improve your focus and your mood significantly. Begin your semester by cleaning up your physical space. Clean your room by donating clothes that you don’t wear, organize your desk, and toss out anything you no longer need.

Don't forget your digital spaces as well — make sure to organize your computer files and unsubscribe from any emails you don’t read. Starting your semester off with a clean computer will save you stress down the line. Mentally reflect on your past semester and figure out what worked well and what you want to change in the following semester. Starting a journal can be a helpful tool to track what works best for you.

Next, prioritize self care to build a solid foundation for success. Think about what helps you feel your best, and commit to those habits. Develop a daily routine that includes time for sleep, exercise, relaxation and school work. Consistency is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stock up on nutritious snacks that you enjoy, stay hydrated to support your energy levels and create a weekly meal plan to save time during the week. To avoid burnout, learn to say no to events that may overwhelm you, sometimes staying in is exactly what you need.

Finally, find hobbies that help you clear your mind, whether it be yoga, putting on a face mask or binge-watching your favorite show.

When it comes to school, preparation is everything. Being prepared before the semester even begins will decrease your stress levels drastically. Be sure to review your schedule and ensure you have the classes you need in order to stay on track academically. Make sure to read through course syllabi, gather your school supplies, and create a planner to track important deadlines. It is also helpful to make goals for your semester, like picking up new study habits or improving your GPA. Setting your semester up into smaller, manageable steps will help you achieve your goals.

Finally, building a strong support system can make a huge difference when it comes to managing difficult situations during the semester. Make sure to stay connected with your friends and plan ways to catch up during the break and stay in touch once classes begin. Additionally, take advantage of campus resources and organizations that align with your interests. With hundreds of clubs available to choose from, there is something for everyone. Don’t forget about campus resources like the tutoring centers and counseling services.
