The Hidden Meanings Within This Fall’s Color Palette

Written By Kayla Van Dyken

Colors, just like the seasons, ebb and flow throughout the year. But have you ever thought about what these colors mean? Color theory is used to evoke emotion and behaviors in nearly every industry, so why would fashion–expression through clothing–be an exception? What is the meaning behind our wardrobes, and what are we subconsciously expressing to those around us? Burgundy, chocolate brown, olive green, and navy blue are staples of the fall 2024 season, so let’s explore the hidden messages within these hues.

Burgundy, accurately predicted to be the hottest color of the season, has been experiencing a renaissance since its original popularity in the 80s. Named after a wine region in central France, Burgundy is finding its way into every nook of the fashion industry. It has been insanely popular among leather accessories, such as purses, shoes, and jackets. But what does this rich color mean? Burgundy is associated with power and wealth, and when worn, conveys leadership, elegance, and ambition. It is described as unaccepting of the status quo, so consider popping a little burgundy into your fall wardrobe for a unique edge!

Brown, of course, had to be represented in this year’s fall color palette, but this time with a sweet twist. Chocolate brown is the hue of the season, and it seems to be replacing black as everyone’s go-to neutral. This shade symbolizes reliability, health, and strength. As fall approaches, all I want to do is curl up with a cup of hot chocolate, and now, we can bring that feeling into fashion. From career to casualwear, chocolate brown expresses warmth, comfort, and a sense of security, creating an image of trustworthiness and safety. Whether it's a cozy sweater or a long skirt, chocolate brown provides the perfect foundation for this season.

Olive, a traditional symbol of peace, has flown its way onto the fall 2024 color palette. Despite the fall season’s preparation for winter, olive green represents life and renewal along with harmony and maturity. Olive green cloaks you in wisdom and compassion, so choose this color to make a good first impression. While green has been trending for some time, this specific shade has been exploding on fall runways, such as Gucci and Burberry. The honorary neutral goes with practically any color you could imagine and recently has been paired with burgundy and brown hues. Transitioning from a fashion statement to a wardrobe staple, olive green is a mandatory addition to your closet.

Navy, commonly a winter shade, has regained popularity this fall due to its versatility. Finding its origin and name from the British navy, this color holds deep-rooted authority and professionalism. Navy blue also symbolizes strength, structure, and sophistication and provides a trustworthy and concentrated look. This is definitely a color to consider for a job interview!

With the 2024 fall color palette, fashion is entering an era of maturity. Burgundy, chocolate brown, olive green, and navy blue exude elegance, energy, and empathy. This fall is a season of responsibility and sophistication that we should not take for granted. Instead, let’s use this opportunity to project these positive qualities through fashion and wield these hidden messages to our advantage.
