Top 10 Necessities For Your Travels Abroad

Written by Sophie Wilmerding

Are you heading off to different spots around the globe? If so, let's talk wardrobe.

A study abroad experience may be one of the most unprecedented adventures to pack for. Traveling to foreign places can be daunting, especially when visiting some of the most iconic fashion destinations. Each city embodies a unique style central to its culture; that's why having these essential and versatile pieces will save you from any fashion crisis you may encounter.

When packing, some might feel the urge to throw everything they own into a suitcase to be equipped for any occasion. However, it is important to leave space for special items you may collect along the way. The key is to pack basic neutrals and layers to form simple, yet stylish outfits. For many University of Wisconsin-Madison students traveling abroad next semester, here are the top 10 necessities to pack for during your travels.

Tip #1: Basic Shirts

When traveling to countries that experience varying climates, cultivating a versatile wardrobe is crucial. These simple yet essential garments are the foundation for adapting to temperature fluctuations and fashioning layered looks that seem effortless. When touring new destinations, a lightweight shirt not only provides a breathable and comfortable base but also allows you to quickly pair it with a cool jacket or cozy sweater when the temperature drops. Wearing a plain shirt with a jacket or sweater presents a polished, put-together vibe that is perfect for casual and semi-formal occasions. Packing a variety of neutral-toned shirts offers versatility with minimal effort.

“I am glad I brought basics. As boring as it sounds, it makes everyday outfits so easy to mix and match,” Abby Brown (UW-Madison senior) said.

Tip #2: Black Boots:

Black boots are timeless and can seamlessly transition from day to night. Whether they are knee-high or ankle-high, black boots can be paired with jeans, skirts, and dresses, making them the most important shoe. Your boots must be comfortable—the last thing you want is to develop painful blisters after walking barefoot all night. The beauty of boots is not only in their aesthetic versatility but also in their timelessness.

“My favorite item I purchased was a pair of tall brown boots which has become a staple of mine now,” Emily Cook (UW-Madison senior) said.

Tip #3: Mini Skirts

Mini skirts offer versatile and fashionable choices for various occasions, making them an ideal wardrobe staple. Whether you are touring local museums, going to class, having dinners with friends, or hitting the clubs, mini skirts can seamlessly transition from one setting to another. The beauty of mini skirts lies in their ability to be effortlessly styled, offering endless possibilities for creating different looks. You can easily elevate or tone down your look by adding a sweater, blazer, or leather jacket for an edgy touch. Pairing them with tall boots and tights not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides practical warmth.

“Black tights with a skirt can elevate any outfit and they actually keep you surprisingly warm,” Hannah Curran  (UW-Madison senior) said.

Tip #4: Mini Dress aka LBD :

A mini dress or LBD (little black dress) is common attire for nightlife in the majority of international cities, “You’ll be clubbing a lot so these are necessities,” said Cook. For the nights you feel less inspired to formulate an intricate outfit, an LBD is the perfect solution. If you don’t enjoy the thrill of shopping, try and purchase this staple piece before, as Emily noted, “It was a struggle to find a good LBD abroad except for when I was thrifting.”

Tip #5: Leather Jacket

Leather jackets are a style statement and an enduring symbol of effortless chic. They are perfect for any forecast as they can be paired with multiple bottoms. While studying abroad, you will have many opportunities to find unique leather jackets in thrift stores and street markets, “My favorite item had to be this red leather jacket that I found at my favorite leather market in Barcelona. I swear my roommates were asking to borrow it constantly,” Cecilia Fleischer (UW-Madison senior) said.

“I bought an oversized brown leather jacket from a vintage store my first month in Rome and literally wore it every day and night since. I brought it on almost every trip — it’s definitely the most sentimental piece of clothing I own,” said Curran.

Tip #6: Jeans :

Since it is uncommon to wear sweatpants or athletic leisure abroad, a pair of your favorite jeans is the next best option. The jeans must be comfortable to walk long distances and sit comfortably in as they will be worn all day long. Since jeans are typically not worn in the evening it’s best to only pack 3-4 pairs.

Tip #7: Cute but Comfortable Sneakers

Having a pair of comfortable sneakers in your suitcase is perfect for times when you will be climbing up flights of stairs, exploring uneven terrains, standing in museums, or wanting to go on spontaneous adventures with ease. Being fashionable doesn’t have to be painful! I suggest New Balances, Vejas, Adidas, or any simple sneaker you have.

Tip #8: Tote Bag :

Say goodbye to your backpack! If you are trying to look trendy while attending class, a tote bag is the perfect solution. Keep in mind you will need to keep your computer and potentially a textbook inside, so make sure you look for something big and durable. While your shoulder may hurt at first, your tote will accompany you on every journey. When you're ready to ditch the books and hop on the train to visit a friend, the tote bag can hold all your necessities. A tote bag is also a great option because it allows you to keep your belongings at your side and in sight. Expert advice: get a tote bag that has a zipper to prevent pickpocketing!

Tip #9:  Cross Body Bag

Another essential bag is a cross-body purse. Emily Cook said that she loved bringing this bag clubbing because it helped prevent her favorite lipgloss and wallet from being stolen. With that said, something simple will do the trick, no need to find something fancy.

Tip #10: A Cozy Lounge Set: Lastly, after a weekend of jet-setting or drinking too much champagne, you will want to slip into a cozy set. “Cause trust you're not gonna wanna look cute like you think you will when you're flying home hungover at midnight on a Sunday,” said Brown. Wearing a matching set will give the illusion you are put together even when you are feeling your worst.

Now that you’ve got the lowdown on packing, don’t forget to embrace the opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and stay open-minded to the spontaneous adventures ahead. Studying abroad is the perfect time to experiment with fashion and form a style that best reflects your personality and passions. Most importantly, stay safe and true to yourself!
