The Vault’s Very Own Flea Market

On Sunday, November 3rd, 2024, Vault members and the UW-Madison campus community had the chance to earn some extra cash and find new threads at the Vault’s second flea market. Originally planned by Vault marketing director Ilana Goldklang and events lead Kimberly Harvey last spring, the immense success of the first event called for a sequel!
Ilana shares the inspiration behind the event, saying, “I’ve always wanted to create a space where smaller fashion companies and creative minds can come together to display their work, so I thought, why not try it with The Vault? It has been amazing to see my vision come to life and give students the opportunity to sell their unique clothing and artwork!”
Thirty vendors, including Vault members, UW students, and local businesses, filled the room with their unique and preloved pieces. This event was held in collaboration with the Oliv Apartments, a brand-new building for student housing. The Oliv hosted the flea market to attract people to their space. Passersby were captivated by clothing glimpsed through the windows, and the cozy study nooks provided each vendor with the perfect spot to showcase their art.
The event also gave students a chance to display their entrepreneurial spirit. They were able to pass on their old clothes to new homes, where someone else could love and style them in their own unique way. Creative lead Veronica Mingle utilized her vendor spot to offer custom alterations, while Vault member Ben Arnoldussen showcased his jewelry business, Calvagna Jewelry. With a diverse array of items for customers to explore, everyone left with something special in hand!
Sustainability in fashion has always been one of the Vault’s top priorities, and this event perfectly embodies that spirit. As fashion lovers, we are always eager to try new things and elevate our style. This event provides everyone with the opportunity to do just that without contributing to fast fashion. While the clothes may be pre-owned, each person brings a unique presence and style that can make any thrifted item feel brand new.
