Developing a Winter Wardrobe
Written by Charlotte Bell
Let’s face it: during the harsh conditions the winter season brings about, sweatpants and sweatshirts become college students’ best friends. While these outfits are perfectly acceptable, (trust me, I’m attached to my sweatpants rotation) there are a variety of ways to enhance your winter wardrobe and even convince you to head to class in ten degree weather to model your new accessories. It’s all about adding unique touches to your everyday winter necessities.
The following recommendations are what I like to call my guide to surviving a midwest winter while looking fashionable at the same time, coming from a born and raised Wisconsinite.
1. Personalize your Wardrobe with a Unique Jacket
I know wearing a coat isn’t a revolutionary idea, but customizing your coat to match your aesthetic is useful not only for elevating your outfit, but improving your confidence as well. From suede, to faux fur, and even trench coats— jackets allow you to personalize your wardrobe. Jackets have the potential to be statement pieces in your trek to class, so finding one that matches your unique style is at the top of this list.
2. Faux Fur Bucket Hats
Faux fur bucket hats have been making a statement during this winter season as yet another option to keep you warm and stylish. This is a great accessory to add a unique and stylish flare to your winter closet!
3. Oversized Scarves
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have an obsession with scarves this winter season. There are so many different ways you can style a scarf to match the outfit you’re wearing, such as a balaclava or a simple drape over an oversized coat. Not to mention the variety of colors and designs that can brighten up an outfit during the cold winter months.
4. Fleece-Lined Tights
Who says you can’t wear skirts in the winter? Fleece-lined tights elevate an outfit by adding an edgy and bold detail to enhance the overall look. The fleece lining ensures that you stay warm while allowing you to wear your favorite warm-weather outfits during the winter as well.
5. Leather Gloves
Leather has made its way into just about every clothing article and accessory, so why stop there? Leather gloves not only keep your hands warm, but provide a classy and elegant touch to your outfit. From coats and pants and now to gloves, this timeless material deserves a spot in your wardrobe this winter!
To build a quality winter wardrobe, balancing functionality and chic pieces is the first step. Whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and confident is key in identifying what unique clothing items are best for your closet. Personalizing and elevating your winter apparel will give you the confidence you need to brace for the weather during this winter season!
